Nice Work If You Can Get It

The Production Company presents presents

Nice Work If You Can Get It

features many of George and Ira Gershwin's biggest hits

This bubbling 1920s-era musical sparkles with extravagant dance numbers, glittering costumes and a delicious love story between a wealthy playboy and the feisty bootlegger who melts his heart. Set in the Prohibition era, Nice Work If You Can Get It features a snappy book by Tony Award winner Joe DiPietro (Memphis). This delicious, madcap tale combines laughter, romance and Broadway magic for an evening bursting with girls, gangsters, glamour and Gershwin. Nice Work features a treasure trove of George and Ira Gershwin's most beloved, instantly recognizable tunes including Let's Call the Whole Thing Off, Someone to Watch Over Me, 'S Wonderful and Fascinating Rhythm.

Rohan Browne (Singin' in the Rain, Strictly Ballroom) is Jimmy Winter, a wealthy and handsome playboy. Esther Hannaford (King Kong, Hairspray) is Billie Bendix, a feisty but beautiful bootlegger who is on the run from the law and steals Jimmy's heart. Christie Whelan-Browne (Singin' in the Rain, Rocky Horror Show) is Jimmy's fiance Eileen Evergreen, the self-proclaimed finest interpreter of modern dance in the world. Gina Riley (Kath & Kim, Chicago) is Duchess Estonia Dulworth, a noted prohibitionist who succumbs to the bottle and falls in love with a gangster. Nicki Wendt (GYPSY, Mother & Son) is Jimmy's mother Millicent, a wealthy matron with great elan. George Kapiniaris (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang, Wogs Out Of Work) is Cookie McGee, a fast-talking, wise-cracking bootlegger. John Wood (Blue Heelers, How to Succeed..) is Senator Max Evergreen, a humourless career politician who lightens up by the end! Tony Farrell (Rocky Horror Show) is Chief Berry, head of the Long Island Police Department and fiercely dedicated to his job. With Monica Swayne (Wicked) as Jeannie, a happy go lucky chorus girl and Jensen Overend (Chitty Chitty Bang Bang) as Duke, Cookie's not-so-bright sidekick.

Directed by Helpmann Award winner, Roger Hodgman (Show Boat, Grey Gardens) with Musical Director John Foreman (The Boy From Oz, Singin' in the Rain) and Choreography by Dana Jolly (Show Boat, Grey Gardens).

George Kapiniaris is one of this country's best loved comedy, music and TV stars - having had an incredible impact on
Greek-Australian popular culture over the last thirty years. After playing to sell out audiences across Australia and with 'Il Dago',
'Comicus Erectus' and 'The Good The Bad & The Ethnic, George is bringing his new show 'Zorba The Greek' to Canterbury Leagues.

Supported by some very special comedic and musical guests,
this show proves to be 90 minutes of non-stop laughter about growing up 'different' in your own country.

A LITTLE BIT ABOUT ZORBA THE FREAK FROM GEORGE
"I put together a show like this, last year for The Darling Harbor Greek Festival and it was a hit with all audiences.

It has many elements including Stand up, Sketch and Music
The show was great success with about 1000 people coming along over 3 shows.

Many venues in around Oz are asking for the show including Casula Arts Centre in Liverpool because of the great word of mouth the show has already created.

The show consists stand up and sketches from myself, a very special guest comedian and an amazing bouzouki performance by Tommy Tsontis with a comedy bouzouki jam by Tommy and myself and members of the audience. The show is very cultural and also very funny.
ZORBA THE FREAK runs for over 90min or two 45 min halves and is jam packed with laughs."

  MORE ABOUT ZORBA THE FREAK
George Kapiniaris performs his Greek/Australian bilingual one man show. Supported by a very special surprise guest this show proves to be 90 minutes of non stop laughter about growing up Greek in Australia.
Kapiniaris is one of Australia's best loved comedy, music and TV stars who had a starring role in the hugely popular "Wogs Out of Work" stage show alongside Nick Giannopoulos and has appeared on the classic TV show Acroplis Now as well as Underbelly, Kick, Joker Poker and The Flying Doctors.
ZORBA THE GREEK'S ANTHONY QUINN WAS A MEXICAN BUT ZORBA THE FREAK'S GEORGE KAPINIARIS IS A REAL GREEK....A GREEK AUSTRALIAN GREEK!

L-R: George Kapiniaris performs with Tommy Tsonis. 11 Mar 2014

Close to 200 people packed into the Paragon Room to see George Kapiniaris perform in Zorba the Freak - his first of three shows in Sydney, at the Canterbury Leagues club last week.
Using his Greek heritage, his wife and children as inspiration, he performed his Greek Australian bilingual one man show with the support of some surprise special guests. Maria Stavropoulou and Nikita Ellenis' skit, combined with their musical talents, took a humorous look at life after many years of marriage. The finale, a jam session with bouzouki virtuoso Tommy Tsonis, made for an all-round great show with 90 minutes of non-stop laughter.

REVIEW

Eric Kontos

South West Voice (9 out of 10) 2015

George Kapiniaris
The audience piles into their seats at Casula Powerhouse theatre for Zorba the Freak last night.
George Kapiniaris is a seriously funny dude.
But he's a lot more than that, as he showed off musical and singing skills at his one man stage show, Zorba the Freak at Casula Powerhouse theatre last night.

If I was marking Zorba the Freak, I'd give it a nine out of 10.
It is a pity that more people from the south west didn't get to see it, since Kapiniaris was only booked for two shows, last night, and one earlier in the day.
But if his gig comes back locally, don't miss it.

And the thing to know is that you don't have to be a Greek-Australian to enjoy a big belly laugh pretty much through most of the show.
Although it does help, because he reminds you of how hard it was growing up Greek in Australia these past four or five decades.

It seems hilarious now, but obviously it wasn't funny having parents who migrated here but were determined to pretty much pretend Marrickville was a suburb of Athens.

During the entire show, over two parts, Kapiniaris sports that cheeky grin we got to know him for in Wog Boy, Acropolis Now and other works.
But he was much funnier than I expected him to be and our group put it down to him blossoming away from the Wog Boy shadow.
He performs very funny renditions of 80s musical hits, as would have been sung by him and his Greek mates, although he needs the aid of hair pieces to recreate the look of bands like Pseudo Echo.

Greek culture, from souvlaki to yeeros and yoghurt is now entrenched into the Aussie way of life, and Kapiniaris captures all of that, in a very, very funny way.

For goodness sake, next time he's in town, make sure you catch this hilarious show.
Not to mention the need to support gigs like Zorba the Freak because they come to us, saving us a trip to the city.
